Melatonin is an essential part to us falling asleep. Created by the pineal gland, production will rise as the sun sets, and will decrease as it rises. despite our bodies naturally producing melatonin, some people may find the need or want to take melatonin supplements to help them get better sleep. So, how much melatonin do you actually need? How much is too much and how little is too little?
Start Slow
Start out slow when you first use melatonin. Try not to take too much and try not to take it too often, or up the dosage too quickly. .1 – .3 milligrams is a good starting adult dose. Though most melatonin sold over the counter is between 1 and 10 milligrams. Though, you should be careful, as over the counter melatonin is not regulated by the FDA. You can’t always trust that what the bottle says is the actual truth. So, if you need a more permanent solution to your insomnia, talking to a sleep coach, or your doctor are much better options.
How Much Is Too Much?
10 milligrams is the highest dose of melatonin an adult should take in a night. Though, it’s best to be careful, because anything above 3 milligrams won’t necessarily get you to sleep faster than a dose of 3 milligrams or below. Plus, a higher dose can cause rebound insomnia, making it even harder to fall asleep the next night.
